Let's add another spoke to the wheel of nerdiness here, huh? |
In 1973, a German five-some called Nighttrain released the funky and vaguely bohemian "Hallo Bimmelbahn." Six years later, the German band Boney M rewrote the song to fit the needs of disco fans, and to great success. Their version, "Gotta Go Home", has a danceable beat with tropical flair from the use of steel drums. If you listen to "Hallo" and "Gotta" back-to-back, you might notice how very similar the two tracks are. Two members of Nighttrain are credited as co-writers of the Boney M version, so it seems like they were down with making a disco version of their own song.
Skip forward a few decades to 2010. Duck Sauce's "Barbra Streisand" is a hit in clubs and its popularity is probably still rising. The track is essentially the Boney M version, but with a shuffle-y beat, lack of steel drums, and the verses about going to an island are replaced with "Barbra Streisand."
Where all this gets weird is when you take into account the remix by Baby Diego. Instead of furthering itself from the original (like most remixes do), this one actually takes a step back. The shuffling is gone, the steel drums are present, and it regains its disco feel; it's Boney M's version all over again! Okay, not exactly, but it's certainly closer to it.
If Baby Diego's edit was remixed, do you think it could go back to being the Nighttrain version? Only time will tell.
Keep on funkin'.
