This infernal game is another one of those that is awful, but really addictive for a while. You play as a dog named Jake who's trying to rescue his canine lover from the dogcatcher. To do this you have to smell a bunch of stuff and challenge other dogs to tug-of-war and pissing contests (literally). Every time you defeat another dog or smell enough smells, and sometimes just for no reason at all, you get a bone. Bones add to your power.
This game has two modes: a third-person running around mode and Smellovision, which is in first-person. In Smellovision you can see the smells, which are fluorescent colored stink waves. It's actually pretty inventive, and maked a game about a dog actually sort of fun.
However, it is really easy to get a headache playing this game. Skynugget and I usually have to stop after an hour or two. It's not a normal vision headache either- it can get really, really bad if you don't stop the stupid game.
This game has a whole bunch of weird glitches, usually relating to the attachment of Jake's legs to his body. I have a picture of Jake standing through a car's windshield- his back legs are just totally inside the car.
Later addition: Here's the picture.

That's legit, man. Stuck in a windshield. |
Another time, I was going up some stairs and his legs just sort of disconnected from his body. (I didn't get a picture of that one, and Skynugget didn't see it, but it happened.) Also, you have to be very careful when you try to interact with objects. I once saw an orange smell (which is a buried bone) drifting from as fence, so I sent Jake to dig it up. It turned out that the bone was on the other side of the fence, and Jake got stuck there digging. I had to restart the game. Actually, I think I just shut it off, because I had a headache by that point.
The jumping is really awkward. Jake has a nice high jump, but he has to be in exactly the right position to use it or he shakes his head and backs up, and your controller vibrates. It gets sort of annoying after the first few times it happens.
You wanna know what else is awkward? That's right, the camera angles. Especially in Smellovision- I don't normally complain about the camera moving too fast in a game, but it does in this case. I think that may be part of the reason why I get headaches a lot playing this game- my eyes can't keep up with the graphics.
All this aside, it's actually a pretty fun game at times. You can pick up chickens, and they'll pop out eggs. There are a lot of strangely voiced characters, who can get annoying (Ms. freakin' Peaches) but are sort of amusing too. There's a guy with a terrible Southern drawl at the Watermill who says "I love my axe" in a really great way. Skynugget and I were rolling on the floor laughing at that one for a while. The graphics are fairly good for an early PS2 game, glitches and camera work aside.
I haven't finished the game, because Skynugget and I reached a fairly dead spot in the game. We can't chase away those accursed pigeons! Maybe eventually I'll try to finish it.
That's all for now, folks!
